Man injured in Carenage police shooting gets bail

A Care­nage man who was shot and in­ju­red three weeks ago dur­ing a po­lice-in­volved shoot­ing in Big Yard, Care­nage, was grant­ed bail yes­ter­day, as the po­lice once again failed to prop­er­ly present their ev­i­dence in the mat­ter.

This al­lowed one of the men, De­quan Dyall, 21, to be grant­ed bail with a sure­ty or a cash al­ter­na­tive of $40,000 af­ter the mat­ter was heard for the sec­ond time in the Port-of-Spain Mag­is­trates’ 4b Court be­fore Mag­is­trate Sarah De Sil­va.

His co-ac­cused Chris­t­ian Eve, 31, was not grant­ed bail dur­ing the hear­ing, but the Mag­is­trate said his bail ap­pli­ca­tion may be con­sid­ered next week.

The two were both charged with shoot­ing at three po­lice of­fi­cers with the in­tent to cause griev­ous bod­i­ly harm, pos­ses­sion of a firearm and am­mu­ni­tion to en­dan­ger life and pos­ses­sion of a firearm and am­mu­ni­tion with­out a valid Firearm User’s Li­cence on May 3.

The shoot­ing in­ci­dent, which is the sub­ject of a Po­lice Com­plaints Au­thor­i­ty in­ves­ti­ga­tion, lead to the death of three peo­ple in­clud­ing 14-year-old Mu­cu­rapo West Sec­ondary School stu­dent Nao­mi Nel­son.

Six oth­er peo­ple were in­jured in­clud­ing po­lice of­fi­cer Ri­car­do Pelti­er af­ter al­leg­ed crim­i­nals and po­lice en­gaged in a shootout in Big Yard.

The in­ci­dent sparked out­rage in the com­mu­ni­ty, with res­i­dents chal­leng­ing Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice Gary Grif­fith’s claim that Nel­son was killed by a crim­i­nal’s bul­let.

Last week, the mat­ter was ad­journed af­ter the pros­e­cu­tion was not able to present the ex­hi­bits in the case, which in­clud­ed the guns the men were ac­cused of hold­ing, as the po­lice claimed that sev­er­al “par­al­lel” in­ves­ti­ga­tions were tak­ing place.
